Buen Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain

The famous Buen Retiro Park, officially known as the Jardines del Buen Retiro, or the Parque del Buen Retiro, is the largest park in the city of Madrid, Spain. The park was owned by the Spanish Monarchy until the late nineteenth century. Today, it is a delightful public park, where locals and tourists alike love to relax.

El Retiro park is quite large, covering an area of 350 acres, located at the edge of the center of Madrid, close to the famous Puerta de Alcala. In the year 1505, the Jeronimos monastery was moved, leaving the site for a new monastery, in the Isabelline Gothic style. For the church, the royal family had built a retreat. King Philip II had moved to Madrid in 1561, and decided to enlarge the Retiro. The park was again extended in 1620 by the Count-Duke of Olivares, Gaspar de Guzman.
